Artefill® -- A New Permanent Filler
Dr. Jochen is one of the first dermatologists in the desert to offer Artefill, a newly FDA-approved dermal filler that’s the first of its kind – a non-resorbable filler that provides a permanent support structure for correcting wrinkles. It is designed for the correction of nasolabial folds, or “smile lines.”
Artefill is a combination of bovine collagen, lidocaine (to lessen any discomfort associated with injection) and polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) microspheres (PMMA is a commonly used medical synthetic implant material). Three to six months after injection, the bovine collagen is gradually absorbed, replaced by the body’s own newly-created collagen which encapsulates the Artefill microspheres. These microspheres provide a permanent support structure beneath the skin to fill out wrinkles and prevent further wrinkling in the treatment area.
“The microspheres don’t migrate, and they’re not absorbed by the body,” explains Dr. Jochen. “They remain surrounded by your natural collagen, providing permanent volume to keep skin smooth and wrinkle-free in the treated areas.”
Most other dermal fillers are temporary (lasting from a few months up to 2 years), so repeated injections are necessary to maintain results. Many of these fillers were developed to minimize allergic reaction; the downside to this is that the body gradually absorbs them. A more permanent alternative would be a synthetic filler that doesn’t biodegrade over time, which is precisely what Artefill is.
Since some people are allergic to bovine collage or lidocaine, a preliminary Artefill allergy test is required a month before injection. There are no known allergies to the synthetic PMMA material. Artecoll, a predecessor of Artefill, has been safely given to more than 200,000 patients worldwide over the past 10 years. In fact, it’s been in cosmetic use outside the U.S. since the late 1980s, longer than any other synthetic filler.
“The optimal candidate for Artefill is someone who’s had dermal filler treatments before and is confident that they’re ready for a permanent change,” says Dr. Jochen.
